In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Political Discussions Taking Place
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
