Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical physical horror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The story commences when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that come with any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
